• As of January 1, 2010 all businesses that store personal information about a Massachusetts resident must be in compliance with the new 201 CMR 17.00: Standards for The Protection of Personal Information of Residents of the Commonwealth Law.

Does this new law apply to your business?

To fall under these regulations, personal information must take on a very specific form. The information must be non-public data that contains a Massachusetts resident’s first and last name or first initial with last name, in combination with any of the following:

• Social Security number; or
• Driver’s license number or state-issued identification card number;
• Financial account number or credit card or debit card number (with or without any security code, access code or password).
